Vancouver, BC: The Velox Valkyries and Burnaby Lake Rugby Club will contest for the Harris Memorial Cup on May 7th, after winning their Women's Adidas Premiership semifinal matches.
SEMIFINALS RESULTS - APRIL 30, 2011 Velox 26 - 20 Capilano RFC Burnaby Lake 34 - 5 United
Velox Valkyries 26, Capilano RFC 20 The third-seeded Velox Valkyries upset the reigning provincial champs and second-seeded Capilano RFC to advance to the Harris Memorial Cup final for the first time since winning the title in 2008. During the 2011 regular season, Velox had gone 0-2 against the North Shore club losing by an overall point total of 74-14. Velox kicker Jane Cruttenden led all scorers on Saturday with a 16-point performance, notching a try, three penalties and a conversion. Selina McGinnis and Kelsey Oding also crossed over for the Island outfit. The Premiership's top scorer Capilano RFC's Andrea Burke was held to a 10-point performance with one try, one penalty and a conversion. Laura Elwood and Ashley Morris rounded out the scoring for Capilano, each contributing a try.
Burnaby Lake 34, United 5 Top-seeded Burnaby Lake Rugby Club produced a six-try performance to down United RFC and advance to the provincial championship for the first time since winning the league in 2009. The win was Burnaby's ninth straight having gone a perfect 8-0 in the regular season. Burnaby tries came courtesy of Laura Harmse, Deb Capps, Lindsay Bernrot, Corinne Jacobsen, Melissa Miyazaki and Maria Gallo. Canadian international Julia Sugawara capped off the impressive showing with two conversions. United's sole try was scored by Shannon Craig.
