Game On!

Published Friday, August 13, 2010 7:00 am

With 165 provincial team members in Calgary and another 29 in California it is officially “game on” for the British Columbia Rugby Union’s Age Grade Provincial teams.

The BC Under 19 Women, Under 18 Men, Under 16 Men (Gold) and Under 16 Men (Blue) all kick-off today at the Calgary Rugby Park for the 2010 National Championship Festival.  Each team travels with 25 athletes and a volunteer management team of 4.  With a variety of teams in each age grade division, fans are encouraged to follow the National Festival website for scores, schedules, rosters and all other information. Click here for website.

The Under 17 Women have arrived in California where they are partaking in an intensive training camp and series of fixtures against top sides from the US West.  With too few provincial teams to have a U17 division at the National Festival this year, Coach Brad Baker has put together what will be an elite rugby experience for this important age category.  Look for a tour summary from the management team when they touch back down in Vancouver on August 18.

Also returning home on August 18 will be the 49 individuals who make up the two BC Under 14 teams (BC Roar & BC Growl) who are competing in Calgary against Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.  Each of the BC teams will play five games over three days with a day-off to visit Drumheller.

On Saturday night (Aug 14) at Calgary Rugby Park, all teams in Calgary will be on hand to watch the BC Bears take on the Prairie Wolf Pack (click here for story).

To execute the specific provincial teams mentioned above, it takes a massive effort by 33 dedicated volunteers who serve as provincial team coaches, managers and therapists.  The British Columbia Rugby Union would like to thank these individuals for their time, effort and for proving the experience of a life-time for our young athletes.
