Under sunny skies and hot conditions the BC Summer
Games got underway in Langley with rugby featured at the U17 Women’s
level (7s) and the U14 Boys level.
U17 Women:
The Women’s event, hosted at the superb Langley Event
Centre, saw the six teams get through four rounds of the first round robin.
Right from the start, Vancouver Island, Thompson Okanagan and Fraser Valley looked
convincing as they rolled to opening game wins. As the day unfolded however, it
was apparent that there was some equity in the competition. Vancouver
Squamish upset Fraser Valley in Round 2 and then stole a win at the death
against Fraser River Delta. Thompson Okanagan remained undefeated until round
three when Vancouver Island posted its third consecutive win. As round four
approached it looked like Vancouver Island might stretch its lead heading into
Day 2, leaving the field to play catch up. The final round results did not
quite go as predicted. The Cariboo stormed back against Vancouver Squamish to tie
the game at 17-17 at the whistle. Thompson Okanagan recovered from its defeat to
the Island by defeating Fraser River Delta. In the final game of the day,
Fraser Valley came from behind twice to overcome Vancouver Island leaving three
teams tied at the top of the standings and an interesting Day 2 of competition
ahead.
