The domestic three game series for Rugby Canada U17 Men’s Development
XV wrapped up on Saturday in North Vancouver when the Development XV overcame
the VRU U17 team 25-21 at Klahanie Park. The Vancouver team came out
strongly and scored after just 7 minutes when flanker Henry Hall barged over
near the posts, giving Like Martin an easy conversion. Vancouver continued to
pressure their opponents, looking to stretch the 7-0 lead. It was the Canada
team that responded with the next score as driving forward work was
finished by the backs with Liam Murphy-Burke scoring in the left corner. With
Discombe hitting the post on the convert, the score stood at 7-5 for the VRU.
Vancouver pressure was once again relieved by Aden Jack’s tactical kicking and
a break in right field was supported in numbers for Lucas Hammond to touch down
and give the Development XV a 10-7 lead.
When a second Canada player was carded, Vancouver exploited
the situation to full effect, with full back Dominguez scoring on the right and
Martin again converting, pushing Vancouver 14-10 in front. A Discombe penalty
moved the score to 14-13 at the half. The Development XV’s week long camp
experience seemed to kick in as the second half resumed. Tries by Dave
Merrithew and Chris Lauzon and a Jack conversion saw them take a commanding
25-14 lead moving into the final 10 minutes. Vancouver flanker Ford
Chamberlain scored by the post giving Martin another easy conversion and the
final score ended 25-21 in favour of the Development XV.
