McKechnie Cup - BC Challenge Cup
The McKechnie Cup was first presented to the BCRU on March 7, 1896, for the winner of the annual series between the Vancouver and Victoria rugby clubs. After the formation of the Vancouver and Victoria Rugby Unions in 1907, the series became known as an inter-union competition. UBC joined the series in 1921 when it became a Union and the short lived Nor-West Rugby Union and the Fraser Valley Rugby Union eventually joined the series. In 1975, the Vancouver Island Rugby Union replaced the Victoria Union. Dr. Mckechnie was a doctor on Vancouver Island who moved to Vancouver and was the Chancellor of UBC from 1918 to 1944. Pacific Pride, a non-union side from Victoria, was invited to join the seires for a brief period.
