VANCOUVER Coach & Referee Clinics

VANCOUVER, BC -  Fresh off a successful coaching clinic with Sir Graham Henry and Wayne Smith that featured over 110 plus coaches this month, BC Rugby has announced details for the upcoming Coach and Referee clinic set for the January 18-19, 2014 weekend.

Four streams will be available for professional development courses along with optional three-hour workshops. The main courses include the Introduction to Competition, Initiation to Rugby, Sevens Level One and a Level One Officiating courses.

The 2014 BC Rugby Coach and Referee Clinics will be hosted at Saint George's School in Vancouver. Facilitators include Dean Murten, Dave Pue and BC Elite Youth Sevens Head Coach Shane Thompson. Rugby Canada's Manager of Coach Development Dustin Hopkins will also be available for workshops.

Introduction to Competition Coaching Course: $200.00 plus tax

Participants who complete the Introduction to Competition stream will be fully qualified to coach any team in a structured competition. The expected outcomes for the course will see coaches trained in athlete development processes in 'Training to Train' and 'Training to Compete' stages of athlete development. Participants will also be trained in 'Making Ethical Decisions', 'Planning a Practice', 'Providing Support to Athletes in Training', 'Analyzing Performance' and 'Game Understanding at an intermediate level'.

Initiation to Rugby Coaching Course: $90.00 plus tax

The Initiation to Contact Course is targeted towards beginner coaches who are working with athletes who have not participated before or have had little experience. The course is very focused on practical rugby instruction with online pre-task theory learning and is designed as a Trained Only Course with no post evaluation. The module is geared towards teaching coaches about rugby and how to coach it. The NCCP COmmunity Initiation context is ideal for Mini, Junior, Elementary and High School coaches that do not already have certification.

IRB Level 1 Sevens: $125.00 plus tax

The IRB Level 1 Sevens coaching course is aimed at coaches wanting to teach the seven-aside variation of the game. It is ideal for both high school and club coaches and includes both theory and practical content needed to coach the Sevens game effectively.

The course will include the following; IRB Laws of the Game for Sevens, Attributes of Sevens players, Principles and Characteristics of Sevens, Analysis of the Sevens Game, Sevens Tournament Team Preparation, the breakdown, kick-offs, sevens specific scrums and line outs and general play structures.

Level 1 Officiating: $70.00 plus tax

Completion of this course will give participants a minimum certification to referee Rugby in British Columbia. Please note prerequisites for those looking to take the course include an IRB Law Test (www.irblaws.com/EN/) and a Rugby Ready Test (www.irbrugbyready.com/). Course participants are required to bring both completion certificates to the course session, or email copies to Dave Pue (Dave.Pue@shaw.ca). Time to complete these tests vary depending on your background -- please allow several hours to complete.

BC Rugby will be coordinating optional workshops featuring BC Elite Youth Sevens coach Shane Thompson and Rugby Canada Manager of Coach Development Dustin Hopkins. Times to be confirmed.

Suggested workshops for the event will be as follows:

  • Observation and hands on session working with Shane Thompson as he prepares BC Elite Youth U18 Men’s Team for Las Vegas
  • Planning for a season: the workshop will focus on: Taking logistics into account when planning your practices and your season,  Planning the order in which athletes do the exercises chosen for a Practice,  Ensuring consistency among practices, micro-cycles, and the yearly plan, Choosing an appropriate sequence for the exercises in a practice, Adjusting exercises, given athletes’ responses in training and Training a technical or tactical ability over several micro-cycles (Facilitator, Marc Bowles).  This will be an accredited NCCP workshop.
  • Organising practice for Mini Rugby: This workshop will focus on effective ways to organise practice at the Fundamental and Learn to Train stage of LTRD. It is aimed at targeting fundamental core skill development and providing a safe and enjoyable environment for players of both sexes (Facilitator TBC)
