BC U17 Men's Open Trial

Date: June 9, 2013Time: 11:30 am - 2:30 pm

VANCOUVER, BC - BC Rugby will be fielding a U17 men's provincial team at this year's National Championships in August.  In preparation for Nationals, BC Rugby is planning to enter a TrueBlue U17 Selects side into the U18 B2Gold Provincial Regional Championships (PRCs) set for July 5-7 at UBC.

Curry Hitchborn has been appointed head coach of this year's U17 program. Over the last year Hitchborn has coached Vancouver's Under-20 team to a Dunbar Keg provincial title, led the Capilano U17s to a provincial championship and in 2012 coached BC's Under-16 men's B-team to a bronze medal at Nationals.

Selection Process - TrueBlue Selects and BC U17
Players eligible (born in 1996) to compete at the BC U17 level should attend the open trial on Sunday, June 9 at UBC from 2:00pm-5:00pm. Please confirm attendance through BC Rugby Provincial Coach and Development Manager Dave Brown (dbrown@bcrugby.com)

Players not selected for the TrueBlue U17 squad should still participate in the PRCs for their regional U18 teams. BC Rugby will select the final BC U17 team to go to Nationals based on performance, and players still have a chance to make that team and represent their province this summer.

Players who ARE selected for the TrueBlue U17 Selects are in top contention for the BC U17 team to go to Nationals. All players selected will be expected to play for the TrueBlue U17 team at the PRCs. Only in rare circumstances should players compete for their regions at PRCs - any request to play for a regional team must go through Dave Brown.

"The BC U17 program is an excellent experience for the players that may have been missed from the U16 process and have since grown," said Hitchborn. "The goal is to ensure that U17 players that would normally only get a few minutes on a U18 team will now get a chance to encounter success with their peers. In order for this to work and maximize the best athletes, the regional coaches and their staff are going to continue with the emphasis on development and support this new team as it will only raise the standard of rugby from within BC."

For more information on this program please contact U17 provincial team coach Curry Hitchborn (curry@bcrugby.com) and BC Rugby Provincial Coach and Development Manager Dave Brown (dbrown@bcrugby.com).
