VANCOUVER - Head coach of the BC Elite Youth Sevens program Shane Thompson has announced the men's U18 and U17 rosters for the final selection camp ahead of the program's 2013 trip to Las Vegas.
The 60 players will assemble in Vancouver in January (4th-6th) for a final selection camp at UBC's Wolfson Fields. The Friday and Saturday sessions will be skill and position-oriented with Sunday set aside for a series of tournament style matches.
"There was more depth at this age grade than I had anticipated," Thompson said after wrapping up the sessions. "There are a lot of strong players and the January camp will give them a final opportunity to put their hands up for selection."
The plan is to send approximately four teams to Vegas, requiring at least 40 athletes for the trip. Thompson will enter two U18 teams into the Las Vegas Invitational's High School Elite division and two U17 squads into the High School Boy's division. Last year's tournament saw the BC squads capture both titles against representative sides from across the US and Canada.
"Every year the Vegas Invitational is getting bigger and it's really become the marquee event of the year," Thompson added. "It's a great opportunity to develop some of these younger players for further down the road."
A graduate of the BCEY7's program is currently competing for the Canadian Senior Men's National Team, an accomplishment Thompson hopes to see for several more of his athletes coming through the pathway.
