Shawnigan Lake School will be hosting their 3rd Annual Residential Summer Rugby Academy from July 8th - 13th, 2012. The Academy offers both a Residential Youth Camp and a Residential Coaching Clinic.
The Residential Youth Camp this year will be offered to girls and boys between the ages of 14 and 17 years. Canada U17 Coaches Jim Delaney and François Ratier will focus on skill development and games to ensure that each participant enjoys the experience and recognizes what it takes to play rugby at a national team level. A second tier will also be offered for less experienced players.
Kieran Crowley (Canadian Senior Men’s XVs Coach) and Geraint John (Canadian Senior Men’s 7s Coach) will make guest appearances. Members of the Canadian Representative teams (Men and Women) will assist with activities, coaching and participate as house parents in the dorms.
The camp has the support of Rugby Canada and the BCRU and has been very well received by coaches and players who have attended the program since its inception (see below).
“This camp went beyond my expectations of what I would encounter here. The rooming arrangements, food, activities, facilities, coaching, drills and talent at the camp were extremely impressive. The experience and rugby was flawless, and personally I cannot wait to return to this fabulous camp.”
Additions to the camp this year include a personal fitness program, a visit to the Canadian National Rugby Training Facility in Langford, team building activities, hiking and more off field recreation (along with the lake of course).
The Shawnigan Lake School Rugby Academy will also feature a coinciding Residential Coaching Clinic. Participants will enhance their coaching ability in a collaborative environment using a combination of activities designed to improve individual coaching techniques and provide a better understanding of the methods used by the National level coaches.
This coaching clinic will be led by John Tait, who has worked full time with the Senior Canadian Men and Women since returning from a professional overseas career 7 years ago. His Senior 7's Women's team is currently ranked #1 in the world. John will offer a clearly defined coaching skill set as well as the National 7's Level 1 certificate (extra cost for those interested). More information and updates can be found on the
A Wednesday afternoon golf or fishing excursion (at a reasonable cost) will again be offered, as well as evening socials at the end of each day to enable coaches from throughout the country to exchange perspectives and develop networks for future professional development and camaraderie. Some great connections have already started over the past couple of years. We have so many good and talented people in our Canadian game that rarely get a chance to come together, professionally or socially - this is that chance!
As Karl Fix says, "It's not just a game, it is a way of life!"
