The annual Canadian Under-17 tour of British Columbia has been scheduled for February 17-26 in 2012 and will be used as the final selection tool before the coaching staff announce their roster headed to England for the Wellington Festival. The program will not be traveling to the US over the winter breaks as it has done in years past.
"There were a couple of reasons to change the selection process this year, one being the cost for the tour to the United States and the value it really brings," said Canada U17 head coach Jim Delaney. "When you consider that we are only together for four or five days down there and when you put into the schedule a couple of games, there is not a lot of time for development."
"The BC event we have held these past two years has really worked well for the program," Delaney added. "We are together for close to 10 or 11 days where we have two high quality games and the environment we create and the schedule of practice, travel and playing is exactly what we expect to experience in Wellington… In the end it`s cheaper than the US."
The plan right now for the BC tour includes games against a U17-U18 rep side from Vancouver Island as well as a game against the BC Rugby Academy XV on the Lower Mainland. The Canada U17 against Vancouver Island match is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, February 23rd in the evening and the Mainland game will be played on Saturday February 25th during the day. Final details are still to be confirmed but the squad will be based at Shawnigan Lake School for the duration of the camp.
The national coaches will select up to 40 players to participate in the February event and the team from Wellington will be selected from those players. All players that have participated in the two regional selection events will be notified of their selection status within the next two weeks.
